Shenandoah LGBTQ Center hiring for new Community Health Worker program
STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) - “What we are seeing in particularly rural communities, lots of folks can get lost in the mix, get lost in the system. This ensures that folks feel supported in the process,” Anhthu Nguyen said.
Nguyen is the executive director of the Shenandoah LGBTQ Center in Staunton.
Center leaders say their new Community Health Worker (CHW) program will be a new way to provide access to health care, education, navigation and coordination for the LGBTQIA+ community.
“There are so many barriers that exist for even under the best of circumstances for folks to find good health care. This ensures that we are reaching the folks in most need and that they are able to succeed and achieve the goals that they want, their health-related goals,” Nguyen added.
There will be a Community Health Worker position. That person will work directly with those in need, helping identify their health-related goals.
“That can be access to STI treatment, referrals for hormone therapy and other gender-affirming treatments but also connections to mental health resources,” Nguyen explained.
Nguyen says when it comes to experience, they are looking for someone that is rooted in the community.
“They will be serving as a strong advocate. Having familiarity and being able to advocate on the unique and specific health needs of our LGBTQ community. But also having a good working knowledge of the local landscape as well,” Nguyen added.
She says the center also hopes to gather data from the program.
“There aren’t a lot of data sets to pull from. We know anecdotally from the history of the center being around for the last three and a half years. This is the first opportunity for us to have a really clear understanding of the health needs of our community and how to address them based on the resources the center can provide,” Nguyen said.
The application is open until the end of the month and Nguyen says they are hoping to hire as soon as possible.
