HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - The Harrisonburg Police Department is participating in the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police & Foundation effort to help donate protective gear for Ukrainians fighting for their freedom.

The donations go to the volunteer group Lift Up Ukraine. The Harrisonburg Police Department delivered 15 vests, 22 gas masks and 70 helmets to a collection site at the Lynchburg Sheriff’s Office Tuesday.

The items donated were beyond their serviceable life by US standards and can no longer be utilized by officers in the field.

“This is a good way for us to be able to use that equipment in a productive manner instead of having it go to waste,” said Lt. Todd Miller of the Harrisonburg Police Department. “It can definitely go towards a good cause and hopefully it can be used to save the life of at least one person.”

Additional agencies will continue collecting gear and more shipments are expected in the future.
