Rockingham County approves lower real estate tax rate
HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - Supervisors in Rockingham County met Wednesday evening to cast a vote they hope will help county residents keep some extra money in their wallets.
The Rockingham Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 in favor of adopting a lowered tax rate from $0.74 per $100 of assessed value to $0.68 in order to help battle the problems of inflation.
In public comment, some of the feedback suggested that the county should look a little harder at the budget and hold off on some projects at least for another year so the county could afford to lower the rate even more. Supervisor Rick Chandler said the proposed budget was one that took more time than any others he can remember.
“I think as we have been over it and over it and over it that we have done our due diligence at looking into this,” said Chandler.
Chandler said part of the reason why this budget was challenging is because of costs increasing at a much higher rate than seen in the past.
The reduced rate would go into effect for the new fiscal year which begins July 1.
