(WHSV) - Over 50 years ago on June 9, 1973, Secretariat completed horse racing’s Triple Crown with a dominant win at the Belmont Stakes.

The race is the longest of the Triple Crown series at 1 1/2 miles. The champion racehorse won by 31 lengths in two minutes and 24 seconds, a record that still stands today, according to History.com.

On that day, approximately 100,000 people attended to see the first horse in 25 years win the Triple Crown.

Secretariat raced six more times after the historic race, winning four of those races and placing second twice.

Secretariat, or “the horse of the century,” retired in November 1973.
