Your furnace is something you probably don't pay much attention to for most of the year, until right about now. And when you flip the switch, you expect it to work.
"I think the most important thing that a homeowner can do to make sure the furnace is working properly and they're getting the most out of their system is keep a clean filter," says Kelly Main of Main Heating & Air Conditioning in Roanoke, Virginia.
Main says the type of filter you buy is just as crucial as changing the filter.
But pricier doesn't always mean better.
"Many times, homeowners will go into a Home Depot or a Lowes big box home improvement store, and buy the most expensive, highest quality filter they can buy and what they don't understand is that many times that filter is not designed with that equipment in mind," Main said.
Main says that can even hurt the performance of the system.
He suggests buying a filter through your HVAC professional.
Also, make sure that your thermostat is reading the correct temperature. Kelly adds you can also save money by cutting the thermostat back by a few degrees when you're not home.
And one more tip: Main says that along with getting your furnace checked out, make sure your humidifier also gets a once over.
