A step to make cycling safer in downtown Harrisonburg

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) — If you drive through Downtown Harrisonburg soon, you may notice new signs posted in the area for cars and bikes.

On Monday, city workers put up "Share the Lane" signs on South Main Street to let drivers know that bicyclists may ride in the middle of a lane.

"I think we just have to ask ourselves what we want our streets to look like downtown," Kyle Lawrence, Executive Director of Shenandoah Valley Bike Coalition, said.

With all the traffic, it may be difficult to build an individual bike lane downtown but Lawrence believes this is a step in the right direction.'

"Do we want fast moving traffic or do we want the traffic to go slower and make it easier for folks to cross on foot and make it easier for folks to ride bikes," Lawerence said.

Other communities in Virginia have also used these signs such as Charlottesville, Norfolk and Fairfax County.
