Virginia State Police charged a Staunton man following a dump truck crash that closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 81 for hours Wednesday morning.

The crash happened around 6:45 a.m. on Nov. 18 at the bridge just south of the New Market area rest stop.

Curtis Eugene Lowe, 50, was driving southbound in the right lane. The dump truck bed raised and struck the bridge with such force that the bed came off of the truck. The bed landed vertically in the roadway.

Lowe was taken to Sentata RMH where he was treated and released.

The driver is charged with reckless driving, driving with defective brakes, and with failure to have a commercial driver's license.

There were no injuries in a secondary crash involving two vehicles trying to avoid the dump truck bed as it stood in the traffic lane.

The bridge, located near milepost 261.5, is the overpass for Concord Church Road (SR 793). VDOT inspected the bridge and plans to do start repair work on Dec. 1

The bridge will be restricted to one lane in the meantime with drivers being directed to follow a stop-and-proceed traffic pattern.
