Victim identified in Augusta County weekend shooting

UPDATE (Dec. 19, 4:45 p.m.):

The victim in Saturday evening's homicide on Morris Mill Road, west of Staunton, has been identified by the Augusta County Sheriff's Office as 50-year-old Christopher Jon Miller, of Bridgewater.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Miller was shot to death at the home of his fiancé at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Saturday.

This is how deputies describe what happened:

"The suspect, Christopher Luke Simmons, entered the home prior to Miller and his fiancé arriving home, and waited for them in hiding. Simmons confronted the couple at gunpoint prior to discharging his firearm multiple times. He subsequently shot Miller in the living room. Miller succumbed to his injuries prior to the arrival of deputies."

Simmons was arrested early Sunday morning after a standoff with deputies, and charged with First Degree Murder, as well as Use of a Firearm in Commission of a felony.

He is currently being held in Middle River Regional Jail without bond.

Simmons appeared in the Augusta County General District Monday afternoon for a bond hearing and his preliminary is scheduled for May 2, 2017 at 1415 hours.


UPDATE (Dec. 18, 8:40 a.m.):

The Augusta County Sheriff's Office has arrested Christopher Luke Simmons.

Simmons, 36, was wanted for first degree murder and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

According to a press release from Sheriff Donald Smith, Simmons jumped out of a vehicle on Berry Farm Road around 2:00 Sunday morning. Deputies found Simmons in a field.

Deputies were in a complete standoff with him throughout the night. Simmons was armed with a handgun and refused to comply with the commands of deputies.

The Sheriff’s Office SWAT and Negotiations Teams spent several hours placing Simmons into custody. Simmons was arrested just before 7:00 a.m. and was transported to the Augusta County Sheriff's Office.

Simmons was wanted in connection to a homicide investigation in the 3300 block of Morris Mill Road. Deputies responded to a disturbance around 9:30 Saturday night after a 911 call was placed.

When deputies arrived, they found a male was shot. The identity will be released when the family has been notified.

The investigation is ongoing.


UPDATE (11:50 p.m.):

Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith confirmed with WHSV one person is dead following Saturday night's shooting.

Sheriff Smith said this is an ongoing homicide investigation with the shooter still at large.

Deputies are currently waiting on search warrants.


A law enforcement source confirmed to WHSV that authorities responded to the scene of a shooting late Saturday, Dec. 17.

It happened on Morris Mill Road, west of Staunton.

According to the source, the alleged shooter was on the loose.
