FBI investigates incident at Civil War re-enactment

UPDATE 11:00 a.m. 10/15/17:

The FBI asked for the public's help with an ongoing investigation into an incident during a Civil War re-enactment at the Cedar Creek & Belle Grove National Historical Park on Saturday.

The agency reported a device was found and rendered safe by police.

The FBI asked anybody who "witnessed any suspicious activity" to contact the agency at 804-261-1044.

UPDATE 12:50 a.m. 10/15/17:

The Cedar Creek Battlefield re-enactment will be cut short after a suspicious package was found at the site Saturday evening.

"Due to this unfortunate situation, our event staff is unable to fulfill the required logistical needs to continue the event on Sunday," Joe D'Arezzo, the President of the Cedar Creek Battlefield Foundation, said in a statement released by the Frederick County Sheriff's Office. "It is regrettable that a nice family event would be disrupted in this way."

As of early Sunday morning, authorities still had not confirmed the content of the suspicious package found. The Sheriff's Office said, however, the Virginia State Police Bomb Squad was called in and '"rendered the device safe."


The site for the Cedar Creek Battlefield re-enactment was evacuated Saturday evening after a "suspicious package" was found, according to a spokesperson with the Frederick County Sheriff's Office.

Earlier in the week, a reported

, prompting organizers to increase security.

The spokesperson told WHSV attendees were evacuated to a nearby elementary school while authorities scanned the area for any other possible items.
