Following up on a story we first brought you at noon on Friday, a Valley man is trying to pick up the pieces after a fire ripped through his garage, destroying everything inside.

It happened just before 5 a.m. Friday in McGaheysville at an address on Goods Mill Road off of Route 33.

Edwin Simmons said his neighbor saw the fire and woke him and his family up. That's when he saw his garage engulfed in flames.

Rockingham County fire and rescue personnel contained it in about 30 minutes; unfortunately by that point, everything in the garage was destroyed --including Simmons' fully-restored 1969 Camaro.

Although he lost many possessions, he is thankful he has his life. "We had old pictures that we kept over the years in one building, but the main thing was it doesn't matter about that stuff," Simmons said. "The main thing is that is wasn't the house we were in (that burned)."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
