Committee formed to discuss overcrowding at Harrisonburg High School

A new committee is now meeting to discuss and recommend options for dealing with

Enrollment projections show that the high school could gain hundreds of students over the next ten years, when the school is already

.

To handle the issue, Harrisonburg

says the school board is doing something many communities don't often do.

"[The board] embarked on making sure that the community is more than encouraged to participate," said Kizner.

Over the next eight weeks, the 30-member High School Space Study Committee will work to recommend options for dealing with overcrowding at HHS.

"The high school project is a project that the entire community should be engaged in," said Kizner."It's a project that will serve this community for decades."

The committee will present recommendations to the board on May 8 with a wider community forum being held on May 11.

The school board will discuss the options at a work session on May 16 and make a decision on June 6. The City Council and School Board will discuss everything at a joint meeting on June 8.

The meetings are open to the public and the next one is Thursday, March 23 at 7 p.m. at the school division offices.
