Virginia State police have confirmed new details in Thursday afternoon's major crash on Route 42 near Wal-Mart. One woman died from her injuries.

The crash happened at 5:03 p.m. on Rt. 42 near the intersection of Garbers Church Road.

Three vehicles were involved.

State police say Robin Ann Milstead, 55, of Bridgewater, was driving a 2007 Toyota northbound when she tried to make a U-turn.

It would have been a legal U-turn.

Police say she was hit in the rear by a 2011 Toyota SUV driven by Brandon Scott Carter, 32, of Dayton. Her Toyota was pushed into southbound lanes of Rt. 42 and was then hit by a 2010 Ford Escape SUV driven by Molly Odessa Miller, 29, Harrisonburg.

All three were taken to hospitals. Milstead and Miller were wearing seat belts. Carter was not wearing a seat belt. Carter was charged with driving under influence of drugs.

At 6:39 p.m., Milstead died because of injuries in the crash.

The crash is still under investigation. The case will be reviewed by the Rockingham County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.
