As drivers hit the road for the Thanksgiving holiday, traffic crashes and congestion on Interstate 81 are leading to delays.

A traffic crash on I-81 at mile marker 239 in Rockingham County is leading to delays for drivers heading south. According to VDOT, no lanes were closed as of 8:45 p.m., but it estimates that there is a delay of at least 2 miles.

Earlier on Wednesday, VDOT says there was a delay on I-81 at mile marker 262 in Rockingham County around 4:00 p.m., which led to a backup of at least 3 miles for drivers heading south.

Shortly after that delay was cleared around 4:30 p.m., VDOT said a traffic crash at mile marker 260 in Rockingham County had closed one southbound lane, leading to up to 10 miles of a backup at one point. VDOT says all lanes are open and there are no delays in that area.

In Augusta County Wednesday afternoon, congestion on Interstate 64 westbound near mile marker 87, the I-81 north interchange, and I-81 southbound near mile marker 221, the I-64 east interchange, led to delays for drivers. VDOT says the delays have since been cleared.
