Dayton latest locality to ditch curbside recycling

The town of Dayton will no longer offer curbside recycling starting next month, joining a growing list of localities which are abandoning the service.

Residents recently received a notice of the change, which stated the town is pursuing other options.

Robert Popowicz Jr, the town manager, explained the reason in a letter to Dayton's council. In it, he said the town's contractor would no longer be able to recycle the items and would instead need to take them to a landfill.

Popowicz could not be immediately reached for further comment.

Harrisonburg and Broadway also shuttered their recycling pickup programs earlier this year. At the time, Broadway's town manager cited a more than 60 percent increase in costs. The company used by Harrisonburg, van der Linde Recycling, closed its house waste processing facility.

The town of Bridgewater, however, opted to keep its program operating after evaluating its effectiveness last spring.

Dayton told those who recycle to leave their bins out on the curb for pick-up November 28.

There will also be a $2.00 reduction in January's trash fee.
