AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) — An Augusta County man was killed in an industrial accident at a Verona workplace on Monday.

According to the Augusta County Sheriff's Office, 36-year-old Thomas Breeden was attempting to slide the tandem axles on a flatbed trailer at Liphart Steel Co. in Verona when he became pinned.

Breeden was pronounced dead when fire/rescue personnel responded to the scene.

“This was a tragic accident. Our thoughts are with the Breeden family and his co-workers”, Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith said in a statement.

Liphart Steel is a fabricator and erector of structural steel, with their headquarters in Richmond and a Valley division at the facility in Verona. WHSV spoke with the Richmond headquarters, which said they have no comment at this time.

Virginia Occupational Safety and Health (VOSH), essentially a state-level version of OSHA, confirmed to WHSV that they are investigating the accident.

However, VOSH could not release any further information because the incident remains under investigation.

Breeden's body was transported to the medical examiner's office in Roanoke for an autopsy.

Investigation into his death remains ongoing, and is being handled by the Augusta County Sheriff's Office and VOSH.
