HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- The countdown is on to the new year, but with the last few days remaining in 2017, you may want to consider making a donation to a charity; not just to get a tax deduction, but to make life better for a local family.
Betty Newell is board president of "Way To Go," a non-profit organization that collects money and donated used cars to help keep low-income working families employed.
They usually get five to 10 vehicles donated per year and these cars make a difference in the lives of those who need them.
Newell said she realized these cars don't just make a difference for parents but children as well, after talking with a boy who's family got a car.
"I asked him, 'what are you most excted about?'" Newell says. "And he said, 'we can get ice cream!' I said, 'what do you mean?' He said, 'well, when we had to take the bus to the grocery store we couldn't get ice cream because it would melt on the way home. Now we can get ice cream.' So I think, you know, just a little thing like that that I probably wouldn't have thought of."
Newell said they also help low-income families who already have cars pay for gas, insurance, DMV fees and vehicle repairs.
