Father arrested for Felony Child Abuse
On June 7, 2016, members of the Harrisonburg Police Department, along with members of the Harrisonburg/Rockingham County Family Health and Child Protective Services, responded to the Sentara RMH Medical Center to investigate injuries to a three-month old boy.
When the child was brought to the center, he was unresponsive. Medical personnel were able to stabilize and treat the child, who was then transported to the Roanoke Memorial Hospital Child Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Through the investigation, it was determined the child suffered internal head hemorrhaging consistent with Shaken Impact Syndrome, also known as Shaken Baby Syndrome. The investigation also revealed the child suffered another injury earlier on the same day from a separate incident.
Following this investigation, on Thursday, June 23, 2016, the Harrisonburg Police Department charged 20-year-old Shawn Patrick Lackey, of Harrisonburg, with two counts of Felony Child Abuse. Lackey is the father of the 3-month-old child.
The Harrisonburg Police Department encourages citizens to be familiar with this type of abuse and know the warning signs. Lieutenant Kurt Boshart says that in doing so, together we can prevent injuries or death and better help the children in our community.
