Hott Apiary receives Certificate of Health from VDACS
There's a new buzz around a valley apiary.
Hott Apiary, in Rockingham County, now has a Certificate of Health from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS).
This is the first time they've received this certificate, meaning the hives are extremely healthy, and free of mites and disease. It opens up a new door of business as well, allowing the owner, Mike Hott, to sell nucleus colonies, which consists of around 15,000 bees. This is an easy way to get started in beekeeping.
Hott said, "I needed to have this, number one: because it's the law, and number two: it helps me to know that I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing, and these bees are healthy."
He added his bees are not around pesticides and he doesn't use treatments either, which helps keep them strong and healthy. All of his bees were inspected to earn the certificate, rather than just some of the bees.
