HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) — Mayor Deanna Reed led a nearly five-mile trek through the streets of Harrisonburg on a bicycle Saturday morning to encourage people to pedal more.

The Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition teamed up with her for the inaugural Mayor's Bike Ride.

The purpose of the event, which the SVBC said replaces previous ice cream rides from past years, was to highlight what the group feels is the importance of leaders prioritizing street safety for bikers. May is also National Bike Month.

It was open to families and children.

"I think it's amazing to have a smaller ride that anyone can join," Corrie Green, a participant, said. "It's great to see our mayor on a bike and see police officers here and the fire department. Everyone is sort of remembering just what it's like to have fun on a bike"

The ride ended at City Hall where the Rotary Club of Harrisonburg was hosting its Strawberry Festival.
