Several police officers were sworn-in to the Harrisonburg Police Department including the city's interim police chief.

Steve Sellers, the former chief for the Albemarle County Police Department, has assumed the responsibility of leading the police department as the city looks for a permanent police chief.

Sellers told reporters on Wednesday night he was traveling in Australia when the city called him to see if he would be interested in the temporary position.

In August, Stephen Monticelli announced his resignation to be effective December 1st. His last working day was last month.

A city spokeswoman said it could take up to six months before a full-time replacement is announced.

"I'm just excited to learn from the officers and be a part of it," said Sellers. "We'll work on making subtle improvements along the way and to do that I need to get improvements from the employees and from the community and I'm looking forward to reaching out and having that one-on-one time with both the community and the officers."

Sellers said he is not interesting in the full-time position, but looks forward to working with the department while the city conducts its search.
