ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) — The town of Broadway has seen new businesses open in the last year, and now, one Harrisonburg-based organization is expanding.
James Madison University Outreach and Engagement's Lifelong Learning Institute is offering classes in the town for the first time!
The Lifelong Learning Institute creates opportunities around the Shenandoah Valley for residents to take a variety of classes.
Three classes are offered in Broadway, including a legacy class capturing family stories and a class about foundations of acrylic art.
"We'll also have a mindfulness through art," said Village Arts Center owner Dawn Murray. "I think it's the third session, which is I believe in March. It's taught by Katie Walkley; she's a local therapist, she's a really lovely lady."
The classes will take place in Broadway's Village Arts Center, which opened just over two years ago.
The Village Arts center is a creative community center; Murray described it as a "fun arts center, not a fine arts center."
The space is used for AA meetings, WyldLife meetings, and all kinds of art for any age. There are often free community events, house concerts, field trips, and birthday parties in the space.
Murray is excited for continuous classes to be offered, rather than one big daily event.
She also hopes the institute will bring people from around the Valley to see what Broadway has to offer.
"There are people who have been members of the Lifelong Learning Institute for a long time who are coming to Broadway for the first time," said Murray. "We're happy to say, 'Hey, while you're here, here are some great places to have lunch, or if you're interested in antiques, there's a great shop down the road!'"
Other classes coming to Broadway focus on crochet and "Nutrition in the Later Years."
The Lifelong Learning Institute also offers classes in multiple locations in Harrisonburg and the town of Elkton.
Session A runs from January 28th-March 1st, Session B from March 11-April 12, and Session C from April 15-May 17. The first year as a member of the Lifelong Learning Institute is free, and $20 annually for returning members.
The Institute also includes special interest groups and trips.
