NEW MARKET, Va. (WHSV)-- A long-time Valley restaurant has closed its doors for good.
On Sunday, Johnny Appleseed Restaurant in New Market posted on Facebook that that day would be their last day in business, and posted a sign to the front doors to let visitors know.
Throughout Monday, hungry travelers were surprised and disappointed to find the doors closed to a family favorite after 44 years of business.
Angela Jernigan was hoping to stop for a grilled cheese and some vegetable soup on her roadtrip through the Valley on Monday.
"I'm very shocked, we've stopped here so many times as we make this trip up 81, and I really enjoyed stopping here and so I'm very disappointed," said Jernigan, who has stopped at the restaurant many times on roadtrips over the past 8 years.
Jernigan says she will miss more than just the good food.
"Always good, warm, homey, that kind of home feeling, and the food was just as good," is how Jernigan explained the atmosphere.
Employees at the adjoining Quality Inn tell WHSV, it is the end of an era. Other community members echoed their sentiment, saying the restaurant will be missed.
WHSV reached out to the general manager of the adjoining Quality Inn where the restaurant is located to find out why the place closed. We are still waiting to hear back.
