Large fire response in Rockingham County
Rescuers responded to a report of a structure fire in Rockingham County near the intersection of McGahey Lane and Spotswood Trail (Rt. 33) around 11:30 Friday night.
Firefighters were told to report to 9986 Bond Lane
for a working structure fire. The address is fewer than 1,000 feet away from the McGaheysville Vol. Fire Co.
McGahey Lane (S.R. 647) near the railroad crossing was closed to traffic during emergency response. The railroad tracks were also closed at times.
WHSV's Channing Frampton made a Facebook live video, which is viewable below.
A witness told WHSV that a large structure with mechanical shopworks inside was on fire and parts of the roof seemed ready to cave in.
Many private vehicles, a race car, and even at least one boat are known to be stored in or around the site.
A sign at the scene said, "Bond Industrial Center" and listed tennants including Loker Auto Parts, C.W. Auto, American Carpet Shop, and Augusta Seed Corp. The sign also had room for five other tennants, but the lettering on those units was faded and gray —possibly indicating vacancies or units privately rented. It was not clear as of 12:50 a.m. Saturday whether any of the listed businesses suffered damage in the fire.
At around 1 a.m., Channing Frampton located Charles Clinedinst of C.W. Auto Repair who said he got a call saying something had exploded in his building.
This is a developing story. WHSV will update the information as new detail comes in from our inquiries and from official sources.
