UPDATE: Police identify suspect in apparent murder-suicide

An investigation concluded a 52-year-old man from Dayton shot and killed a woman before shooting himself on Thursday, according to updated information released by the Harrisonburg Police Department.

Police and medical crews responded to the 1200 block of Goldfinch Drive — not far off Blue Ridge Drive — a little before 6:00 p.m. Neighbors reported hearing gunshots.

Authorities said at the time two bodies were found with gunshot wounds in what was believed it to be a murder-suicide.

Police said on Saturday an investigation found Phillip Pope shot a 44-year-old woman who lived inside the home and he knew. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pope fled the scene on foot and later fatally shot himself nearby, according to police.
