AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) — A 71-year-old Fishersville man was killed when a tree fell on top of him over the weekend.

According to the Augusta County Sheriff's Office, a tree service contractor was cutting trees on Saturday and a man observing the process had permission to get some of the wood. The man was asked to leave the area along the 200 block of Hickory Hill Lane because of the dangers associated with the cutting.

Lieutenant Aaron LeVeck with the Augusta County Sheriff's Office said, it was believed the man had left before crews knocked down the tree, but as it fell, the contractor witnessed the tree fall onto the man who was on his lawnmower at the time. Crews called 911 but when first responders showed up the man had been pronounced dead.

Investigators did not release the name of the man who died.
