ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) — UPDATE (2:30 p.m.):
All lanes are open again on I-81 South in Rockingham County after a multi-vehicle accident led to miles of delays for hours.
Drivers headed south on I-81 through Rockingham County should be prepared for significant delays just north of Harrisonburg.
At mile marker 255, a multi-vehicle accident has closed the left shoulder, left lane, and right shoulder.
This is leading to delays of about six miles.
Drivers can also expect additional congestion on Route 11 as many leave the interstate to avoid the traffic.
Nearly 39 million people nationwide are expected to be driving this Memorial Day weekend, including 1 million Virginians, leading to heavy traffic on interstates like I-81. Police encourage all drivers to provide plenty of time to reach their destination, buckle up, and obey all traffic laws.
