ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) — UPDATE (5:40 p.m.):
All southbound lanes of Interstate 81 are reopen after a multi-vehicle accident at mile marker 237, north of Weyers Cave, briefly closed both lanes, leading to significant delays.
However, VDOT estimates delays on the northbound side of the interstate at mile marker 235 for a separate multi-vehicle accident that has now been cleared.
Congestion also remains along the interstate from mile marker 235 on the southbound side.
Drivers heading south on Interstate 81 towards Augusta County should be prepared for serious delays between Bridgewater and Weyers Cave.
A multi-vehicle accident at mile marker 237 has closed the left shoulder, left lane, and right lane of the southbound portion of the interstate. Traffic appears to be getting by on the right shoulder, however.
A witness on-scene reported to WHSV that the incident appeared to involve at least three vehicles in the left-hand lane.
Backups from the scene are visible from VDOT traffic cameras from mile marker 237 nearly back to Harrisonburg at almost ten miles, but no official estimate of backups from the scene has been provided.
VDOT also reports traffic congestion beginning at mile marker 235 in Weyers Cave and leading back at least seven miles, though no cause is stated.
Drivers can also expect related congestion on Route 11.
This comes just a few hours after delays finally cleared from the scene of an overturned tractor trailer that shut down northbound traffic on I-81 at mile marker 243 throughout the morning and into the early afternoon.
