ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) — A New Market man was killed on Interstate 81 early Thursday morning in a crash involving a tractor trailer.

According to Virginia State Police, 59-year-old Hoa Van Dau, of New Market, was heading north on I-81 through Rockingham County around 3:09 a.m. on Thursday.

When Dau, in a 2004 Jeep Wrangler, made it to the 253 mile marker, police say a tractor trailer also driving north rear-ended him.

The impact of the crash sent both vehicles off the right side of the highway. As the Jeep went off the road, it overturned. Dau, who police confirmed was wearing a safety belt, died at the scene.

The driver of the tractor trailer, 40-year-old Letroy D. Sims, of Spartansburg, South Carolina, was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

Sims is charged with reckless driving.
