HARRISONBURG, Va (WHSV) — The city of Harrisonburg is partnering with Gift and Thrift to find a better way of donating clothes and providing them to those in need in the community.
They say many people have been leaving clothes curbside or bringing them to the recycling center, but they were ending up in the landfill because there was no way to donate them — that is, until now.
Gift and Thrift provided a clothing donation box that is now at the recycling center, where people can drop off clothing so it can be donated properly. Shannon Secrist, general manager of Gift and Thrift, says he's excited to partner with the city on this project.
"It helps us to be able to serve this community, it's in line with our mission to keep stuff out of the landfill and to reuse it."
He said, "There's a lot of need in this community, and if it's good usable, sell-able stuff we're happy to take, and that way we can provide these things at a low cost for people who might now be able to afford it otherwise."
You can bring lightly used clothing with no holes or stains to the box during the recycling center's normal business hours. This time of year, they have high demand for winter weather clothing.
