HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) — New Bridges Immigrant Resource Center and Fairfield Center, both nonprofits in Harrisonburg, organized a forum at Asbury United Methodist Church on Saturday to discuss immigration.
Small groups discussed a series of topics which spark heated debate in communities across the country — like the enforcement of deportation laws, welcoming newcomers to society and accepting refugees from war-torn regions of the world.
The goal was to elaborate on ways to facilitate peaceful and productive discussions.
"We go to school with each other we meet each other at restaurants and in shopping areas," Kara Dillard, with National Issues Forum Institute, said. "It's important that we, because we all experience immigration, talk together with each other. "
Another aim of the forum was to teach those in attendance how to teach others.
The forum was put together through funding by the United Way of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County and both organizations hope to hold another in the coming months.
