Police: One dead, four injured in DUI crash


ORANGE COUNTY, Va. (WCAV) — One person is dead and four others, including two children, were injured following a crash on Route 20 in Orange County.

According to a release, the crash happened just after 2 a.m. Sunday morning in the 25,400-block of Constitution Highway near Unionville.

The Virginia State Police said a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling south on Route 20 when it crossed the center line and into the northbound lane.

The preliminary investigation revealed the Silverado side-swiped a 2013 Toyota Tacoma traveling northbound. It had attempted to swerve to avoid being hit.

The driver of the Silverado then hit a 2009 Honda Civic head-on and landed on top of it, according to Virginia State Police.

The driver of the Chevrolet, 20-year-old Noah C. Smith, of Unionville, was not injured. He was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the Toyota, 23-year-old Jose Portillo Melgar, of Baton Rouge, La., was transported to the University of Virginia Health System for treatment of minor injuries.

His front seat passenger, 54-year-old Argentina Santiago, of Fredericksburg, was flown to UVA Health System for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

A 3-year-old male passenger was transported to UVA Health System for treatment of minor injuries. The two adults were wearing seat belts and the juvenile was in a child safety seat, troopers said.

The driver of the Honda, 29-year-old Delmys M. De Jesus, of Fredericksburg, died at the scene. She was wearing a seat belt.

A 7-year-old female passenger was transported to UVA Health System for treatment of minor injuries. Both the driver and juvenile passenger were wearing seat belts, troopers said.

Smith was arrested for DUI and for DUI manslaughter. He is currently being held without bond at the Central Virginia Regional Jail.

The Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team is assisting with the ongoing crash investigation.
