ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) — Beginning on Monday, February 18th, about 1,000 feet of Massanetta Springs Road near Route 33 will be closed.
The closure will begin at 10 a.m.; it runs from just south of Preston Lakes to the Massanetta Springs Hotel Conference Center.
In the map seen here, only the red line will be closed.
"We plan on widening Massanetta Springs Road to accommodate turn lanes from Route 33, also turn lanes to the Quarles Court complex, as well as Preston Lakes," said Casey Armstrong, assistant county administrator.
The detour takes drivers from Massanetta Springs Road to Shen Lake Drive, to Port Republic, then Boyers Road onto Stone Spring to get back up to 33.
The entire half-mile project will be completed in September, but that portion should reopen in June.
One goal is to eliminate topography issues.
"We've had our eye on this for a few years, this is kind of a combination of some safety concerns," said Armstrong. "Obviously, development picking up in that area, we realize we need to have longer turn lanes, wider shoulder areas, and we need to take out some hills that are in that section of the road."
The revenue sharing project includes Rockingham County, VDOT, and local landowners.
The road closure will not fully cut off any neighborhood or business entrances.
There will be night work on that stretch in May, but we will have monthly updates on this project.
