Officials: recent crashes into Waynesboro buildings were preventable
The Waynesboro Fire Department says the recent crashes into city businesses were preventable.
There have been three crashes into buildings in recent months — two happened last week at the same shopping center.
The fire department says they aren't common, but they say distracted driving usually plays a role.
"The biggest issue is distracted driving, people texting or talking on the phone at the same time they're trying to drive," said Justin Ide, public information officer for the fire department. "They're not concentrating on what they're doing, and that's when accidents happen."
Other businesses in the area aren't concerned this will happen again. One person said that it was a fluke that the accidents happened so close together.
The fire department said it's important for drivers to stay alert in order to prevent accidents, since there isn't anything businesses can do.
