Rockingham County has the same credit score as the U.S. government, according to Standard & Poor's.

The county got its first credit report from the three biggest agencies.

S&P rated the county AA+, Moody's rated it AA2, and Fitch gave a AA rating.

The credit agencies had several good things to say about the county, including its low unemployment rate, its budget surpluses despite the recession, and its diverse economy.

The reports say some of the biggest employers of county residents are James Madison University, Merck, MillerCoors, Rockingham County Public Schools, Rockingham Memorial Hospital, and Cargill.

The main negative finding in the report is the county's below average salaries compared to other parts of the state.
