UPDATE (6:58 p.m.):

All lanes of I-64 West are clear, following a school bus fire that shut down the westbound lanes for about an hour. Read below for all the details on the scenario that unfolded.


UPDATE (6:04 p.m.):

One lane of I-64 West has reopened following a school bus fire at the base of Afton Mountain in Albemarle County, at mile marker 103.

The west right lane and right shoulder remain closed. All students, coaches, and the driver made it off of the Albemarle County schoolbus safely.

Delays on the interstate extend about nine miles.


UPDATE (5:47 p.m.):

Virginia State Police have provided additional details on a school bus fire which has shut down all lanes of I-64 West at the base of Afton Mountain in Albemarle County.

According to an official statement, Trooper L.B. Dowell responded at 4:58 p.m. to a report of a vehicle fire at the 103 mile marker on Interstate 64, where he found an Albemarle County school bus on the shoulder.

The bus, traveling west on I-64, pulled onto the shoulder when the vehicle began smoking heavily. Thanks to the quick thinking of the students and coaches on board, as well as the help of several motorists who pulled over to assist, all 23 students, three coaches and driver exited the bus without injury.

Another bus is headed to the scene to transport the students and coaches.


ORIGINAL STORY (5:05 p.m.):

All westbound lanes of I-64 are shut down just east of Augusta County due to a fire aboard a school bus.

Traffic cameras showed a school bus in flames at mile marker 103.7, at the base of Afton Mountain in Albemarle County

Video of the scene was submitted to WHSV, which you can see in this article. All people involved appear to be okay, with no injuries reported.

State Police confirm to WHSV's sister station, WCAV, that all children were able to leave the bus safely. It is an Albemarle County Public school bus.

Albemarle County Police expect I-64 West will be closed for another hour, as crews respond to the scene, leading to major delays along the interstate.

Drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes if at all possible.
