ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) — UPDATE (4:30 p.m.):
All lanes of Interstate 81 are open again and all delays have cleared after a pair of crashes lead to over four miles of delays in Rockingham County on Wednesday afternoon.
Hours after a crash just south of Staunton led to miles of delays on I-81 North (now clear), a separate crash is causing more backups to the north.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), a crash has shut down the northbound left shoulder, left lane, and right shoulder of the interstate at mile marker 255, between Harrisonburg and Broadway.
Reports from the scene indicate that a truck with a U-Haul trailer was involved in the crash. It's unclear if Wednesday's windy conditions may have contributed.
As of 2:20 p.m., backups from the scene stretched at least four miles back.
In the stretch of backups, a secondary crash has caused more problems. At mile marker 251.4, the northbound right shoulder is closed. Earlier, the left lane was closed at that scene as well, but that part of the lane has re-opened.
Additional congestion can be expected on Route 11 as drivers seek alternate routes.
