According to WHSV's sister station, WDBJ, strong, gusty winds and a confirmed tornado in the area led to downed trees and damage to buildings. A home was destroyed in the storm near the intersection of U.S. 220 and Fishburn Mountain Road.
The Franklin County Humane Society posted on its Facebook page that its building had been damaged.
"We are OK at the Humane Society," the post stated. "A possible tornado touched down at the local pound."
No injuries have been reported, according to Franklin County Sheriff's deputies, but emergency responders are on scene.
Portions of U.S. 220 North were closed when a tree fell across the road, from 8.5 miles south of the junction of State Route 40 Business near Rocky Mount to 3.9 miles south of State Route 40 Business, according to VDOT.
