AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) — Virginia State Police continue to investigate a deadly traffic crash that occurred late Thursday night on Interstate 81 near Staunton.
At 10:25 p.m. on Dec. 5, troopers responded to a single vehicle crash on I-81 southbound at mile marker 221.
Police say a 2002 Toyota Tacoma had been driving south on the interstate when, near MM 221, the vehicle ran off the left side of the roadway, hit an embankment, and overturned several times in the median.
The driver, identified as 23-year-old Nathan Eye, of Staunton, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. Police confirmed he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The incident temporarily shut down the left lane of the interstate as authorities responded to the scene.
Virginia State Police continue to investigate the crash, but say speed was a factor.
It's the second crash this week in the Valley in which a young driver who was not wearing a seat belt was ejected and killed. On Tuesday night, a 21-year-old Harrisonburg was killed in a crash on Briery Branch Rd.
