FAUQUIER COUNTY, Va. (WHSV ) — Virginia State Police is investigating a train collision that happened in the Delaplane community of Fauquier County Thursday evening.

According to a press release, a Hyundai Tiburon was driving south on Winchester Road and was approaching a railroad crossing near the intersection of Rokeby Road.

Police report the crossing's safety arm lowered and warning lights came on to indicate a train was coming.

The Hyundai began stopping before it got to the tracks, but was rear-ended by a Toyota pickup truck, according to troopers, sending the Hyundai across the tracks and to the other side.

The Toyota pickup, however, ended up on the tracks and disabled.

Police say the the 58-year-old female driver and her three juvenile passengers – a 14-year-old male, 12-year-old male and 8-year-old female – were able to get out of the vehicle and escape the tracks before the incoming train arrived.

But when the train hit the truck sitting across the tracks, it shoved the truck off the tracks and directly into the 58-year-old woman.

She was taken to Winchester Medical Center for treatment of life-threatening injuries. The children were taken to Fauquier Health Hospital, where the youngest was treated for a minor injury.

No other injuries were reported. State Police say the Norfolk-Southern train remained on the tracks following the collision.

Charges are pending as the investigation remains ongoing.
