State police investigating deadly motorcycle crash in Rockingham County

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) -- UPDATE (11 a.m. May 3):

Virginia State Police have released new details on a fatal crash involving a motorcycle and an SUV on Tuesday night.

According to Sgt. Tyler, a 2006 Victory motorcycle with two people on it was driving north on Peake Mountain Road (State Route 612) in Rockingham County, when the driver lost control and slid into a 2011 Ford Explorer that was heading westbound and stopped at the intersection of War Branch Road.

The driver of the motorcycle has been identified as Robert Elwood Dean III, 21, of Shenandoah. He was taken to Sentara RMH for treatment of serious injuries.

The passenger, Tonya Lynn Petit, 28, of Timberville, died at the scene.

There were no injuries to those in the Explorer and both the driver and passenger of the motorcycle were wearing helmets.

Virginia State Police is investigating the crash and spokeswoman Corinne Geller says alcohol was not a factor.

Updated information about this crash was earlier added to the incorrect story, about a second fatal motorcycle accident involving a state police vehicle on Tuesday night. Both articles have been corrected.


A motorcyclist's passenger died after a crash in Rockingham County on Tuesday night.

Virginia State Police responded to a two-vehicle crash along Peake Mountain Road and War Branch Road shortly after 8:30 p.m.

The motorcycle was traveling on Peake Mountain Road near War Branch Road when it lost control and slid into another vehicle, according to a state police spokeswoman. The passenger riding the motorcycle died at the scene.

Virginia State Police said the crash remains under investigation.
