Stores in downtown Harrisonburg prep for cookie tour

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) — Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance is hosting its second annual Cookie Tour on December 1, 2018. This is part of the Winter Wonderfest in downtown Harrisonburg.

There are twelve stops along the way where participants get a locally made cookie.

Erin Smith, the events manager for Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance, said the concept of the Cookie Tour is easy — you purchase a ticket and then go through a self-guided tour of participating stores downtown and get a locally made gourmet cookie.

"It's a good opportunity to spend time with kids, or have a girls' weekend, or just get downtown and shop, and it's a fun activity with friends," said Smith.

The tour is a way for people in the community to get to check out stores downtown. Faith Woodward, the marketing director for withSimplicity, said it is a great way for folks to meet the owners of the stores and check out products.

"I think they realize that there's something so special about seeing the owner right then and there and being able to see their creations, and be able to talk to people that you get to see the face behind a brand. It's nice to kind of be exciting, and to offer something new to people and to see new faces and that's always extremely important to us to make those connections to new people that might not normally be coming in," said Woodward.

Food.Bar.Food is one of the restaurants making cookies for the event. Beau Floyd, the chef at Food.Bar.Food., said they do not usually make cookies, so this is a fun way to experiment.

"We're going to do a rocky road popcorn white chocolate chip cookie and we're going to get the rocky road popcorn from Shirley's," said Floyd. "You know, this is sort of an opportunity for us to work with another business in the community, which is nice. We like to try to support as many people in the local community as we can."

Tickets cost $15 and there are only 200 available. All of the money from this event goes to the Friendly City Merchant, which means the money goes back into downtown and local businesses. They are selling quickly. You can purchase a ticket by clicking here .
