Community Foundation encourages people to 'point, click, give' in the Great Community Give

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) — The second annual Great Community Give is on Wednesday, April 17. It is a day for the Community Foundation in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County to help rally the community to donate to local nonprofits.

The Great Community Give began at 6:30 a.m. and ends at 8:00 p.m.

In 2018, the goal started at $70,000, but it was reached within hours. The total amount raised was $276,000. The goal for 2019 is $333,000 and 3,333 donors.

Amanda Bomfim, a graduate assistant for the Community Foundation, said it is an exciting day to see how the community comes together to help the nonprofits.

"These nonprofits serve our area every day, and they serve a variety of our needs and address the needs of our community, so it's important that we have this one day to give back to those nonprofits and show that we love our community," said Bomfim.

This year, there are 89 nonprofits participating in a variety of categories, like arts, environment, museums, libraries, education, children and youth, civic and more.

Revlan Hill, the executive director of the Community Foundation of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, said that there are $73,000 worth of prizes available for the participating nonprofits to win throughout the day.

There is a leader board and nonprofits that raise the most money or have the most donors for the hour are eligible for prizes, as well as a "golden ticket" prize. The "golden ticket" prize means the foundation pulls the name of a donor and the nonprofit that donor chose receives $500.

This year, there is also a prize for nonprofits that have all of their board members donate. Those nonprofits get put into a drawing for an extra $2,500.

"I have faith that Harrisonburg and Rockingham County and beyond is going to be very generous. We live in an incredible community, and I expect that our community is going to get behind these 89 nonprofits," said Hill.

Donations must be made online to help the nonprofits win the prizes. The community foundation said it is as easy as "point, click, give" to donate.
