FLUVANNA COUNTY, Va. (NEWSPLEX) -- Virginia State Police say three people were killed when a tractor-trailer hit a car on Route 15 in Fluvanna County.
The crash occurred in the Bremo Bluff community near Route 656 – near the Fluvanna County and Buckingham County line - at around 9:10 a.m.
The agency said in a news release that a tractor-trailer loaded with sand was traveling south on Route 15 about 9 a.m. Monday. Troopers say the vehicle crossed the center line while it was traveling downhill and on a curve, and struck a northbound 2015 Honda sedan. The tractor-trailer fell on its side.
The Honda’s driver, Roderick V. Manifold, 69, of Lake Monticello, and two passengers died at the scene. The passengers were identified as Manifold’s wife, Demetria B. Manifold, 69, of Lake Monticello, and his mother-in-law, Marion J. Brewer, 91, of Chesapeake.
All three were wearing seatbelts.
The truck driver, 51-year-old Franklin L. Rowe of Weems, was treated for minor injuries at the scene and is expected to be fine.
Rowe has been charged with reckless driving. Additional charges are pending, following the investigation of the crash and a consultation with the Fluvanna County Commonwealth's Attorney.
Route 15 remained closed in both directions for hours as the sand was cleaned up and the truck removed from the scene.
The crash is under investigation.
