HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) — According to the Virginia Department of Health, flu activity is widespread in Virginia.
The Northwest Region, which includes the Shenandoah Valley, reported 2.8 percent of doctors visits were for Influenza like illness this week.
However, Dr. Laura Kornegay, Health Director for the Central Shenandoah Health District, said the flu may not be as bad this year, as it was last year.
"The predominant sub-type last year was H3N2 which tends to cause a more severe illness," said Dr. Kornegay. "Hopefully with H1 being the predominant circulating strain, we may have a better season."
Kornegay said the flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and those around you. She believes the vaccine is more effective this year.
