VDOT will pause construction on major roads during holiday

STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) — As people are traveling next week before the July Fourth holiday, VDOT will pause construction and open travel lanes on all major roads across the state.

The adjustment is scheduled to happen between noon on July 3 and noon on July 5. VDOT expects this to be the heaviest travel period, but with the holiday in the middle of the week, other times could be busy as well.

"This year is a little different in that the holiday is smack dab in the middle of the week," said Ken Slack, communication specialist for the Staunton district. "So some folks may be travelling one weekend, some folks may travel another."

VDOT also has several tools travelers can use as they're planning trips over the holiday. People can go online to either the Virginia 511 website or VDOT's website.

There, you'll be able to find a travel trends map that estimates travel time for different roads across the state. You can also find the list of construction sites that won't close during the holiday on their website as well.
