Vehicle fire closes all northbound lanes of I-81 near Lacey Spring

Drivers heading north on Interstate 81 should be prepared for serious delays just north of Harrisonburg.

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), a vehicle fire has shut down all northbound lanes of I-81 at mile marker 254.6, near Lacey Spring.

Many drivers are likely to exit the interstate on to Route 11 as a detour around the scene, which will cause additional congestion on Rt. 11 as well.

There is no immediate estimate on when lanes will reopen.

As of 4:43 p.m., backups stretched at least four miles.
