VERONA, Va (WHSV) -- A Verona man is the first to win the top prize in the Cash Money scratcher game from the Virginia Lottery.
James Rankin enjoys playing the lottery a few times a week.
That enjoyment turned into a thrilling experience when he scratched a Cash Money ticket from the Virginia Lottery and discovered he’d won the game’s $150,000 top prize.
It happened when he stopped by Royal #8, located at 2395 Lee Highway in Mt. Sidney. He said he initially didn’t think he was seeing it right, so he asked the clerk to look at the ticket. The clerk got very excited and confirmed Rankin had won big.
Cash Money is one of dozens of Scratcher games available from the Virginia Lottery. It features prizes ranging from $5 to $150,000.
Rankin is the first person to claim the top prize in this game, which means three more $150,000 tickets are unclaimed.
The chances of winning the top prize in this game are 1 in 1,040,400. The chances of winning any prize in this game are 1 in 4.01.
When it comes to education, the Virginia Lottery is game. Rankin lives in Augusta County, which received nearly $5.7 million in lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year.
Now in its 30th year, the Virginia Lottery generates more than $1.6 million per day for Virginia’s K-12 public schools. Operating entirely on revenue from the sale of lottery products, the lottery generated more than $600 million for Virginia’s public schools in Fiscal Year 2018.
