Police say a Virginia police officer shot a naked man, who later died from his injuries, on an interstate during rush hour.

Police say the shooting occurred on Interstate 95 Monday evening. The man, 24-year-old Marcus-David L. Peters of Henrico County, was hospitalized and died shortly after midnight.

All northbound lanes of Interstate 95 were closed at mile marker 75 near Chamberlayne Avenue, as well as the southbound left lane and shoulder.

Richmond police spokesman Gene Lepley says the incident began when an officer witnessed a hit-and-run at an intersection at 5:33 p.m. The officer pursued the driver, who drove on the ramp on Chamberlayne Avenue. Once upon the ramp, the fleeing driver hit two other vehicles and struck a tree.

It was then reported that a naked man was "running around crazy" on the interstate.

Officers attempted to use their tasers and say one officer resorted to using his gun when the man charged at officers.

Peters was shot twice in the abdomen, according to WRIC.

The officer involved in the shooting is being questioned and on administrative leave, according to Lepley.
