Virginia ranks 5th in nation in apple production
According to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Virginia ranks 5th in the nation for utilized apple production in 2015.
Total apple production was estimated at 195 million pounds, which was down 10 million pounds from 2014. The average price received for apples in 2015 was 17.7 cents per pound, up 0.4 cents from 2014. The value of the crop was 34.5 million dollars.
Local grower Carroll Ryan told us Virginia apples have the best taste. Ryan said, "if apples and apple products were judged like you judge wine, we'd be number one."
Ryan is expecting to lose one-third of his crop this year to freeze damage.
