Warmer temperatures could increase chance of water main breaks

STAUNTON,Va.(WHSV) — With single digit temperatures earlier this week and warmer weather predicted for this weekend, Staunton Public Works is on the lookout for any possible water main breaks.

In January alone, Public Works responded to 15 different water main breaks.

However, even with the frigid weather this past week, this number is lower than last year as crews responded to about 22 breaks in January of 2018.

Public Works said breaks are more likely to happen when weather drastically changes from cold to warm.

This causes water to freeze in pipes, expand, and then burst.

"Each season is different, there are a lot of factors that determine how a break happens," Thomas Sliwoski, Director of Staunton Public Works, said. "Unfortunately for us, it's kind of a fact of life; again, it's not a question of if, but when will a break occur."

Sliwoski said crews will be on call this weekend in preparation for any incident and that, if you see a water break, you should report it at (540)-332-3896.
